Mom-like and Kid-like

It was bound to happen. All last year, I was just waiting to show up to preschool on the wrong day or at the wrong time. But I managed to make it the whole year without messing up. This Tuesday, I got Toshi all ready for school. She was pumped.

We arrived a few minutes early and the parking lot was not crowded. In fact, the lights weren’t on in the front room. But I unlocked the door and Toshi’s teachers come out of the backroom and greeted her. Then they proceeded to inform me that school starts on Wednesday. I was so embarrassed even though it’s not a big deal.

So we played at home instead.

And I promised Toshi we could even go to Target and get a new dress for the real first day of school. She kept pointing out Disney princess t-shirts, but they were too expensive (and princessy) for my taste. So I convinced her to get this polka dot/flower dress (that was $6.50). She was lukewarm about it, but agreed.

This morning (the real first day of school), she told me that this dress was not that pretty. Apparently to be qualified as pretty, the dress must have flowers on both the top and the bottom. I felt so mom-like as I tried to convince her that polka dots were cool. I also thought that Toshi was getting so kid-like with her own ideas and opinions. She is growing up.

The other day I watched movies of her from when she was Marf’s age. I really miss 1 year old Toshi! I doubt I’ll be able to describe what it feels like, but I’ll try: It’s like this little innocent baby girl that vanished. She was so chubby and funny and just beginning to reveal her future self. I love how she is now, but I miss that baby toddler. It went by too fast.

Anyway, here is the real first day. She probably isn’t as excited because it’s the second time we did this.
