Can’t touch this

Now that Toshi can crawl, she likes to touch everything. She also likes to slap, suck, pinch, and yank on things. And if I stop her, she whines or fake cries. Just like her mama, she is a girl who likes to get things her way. I kind of forgot about this until we entered a room full of babies.

Today was finally baby day at the library. When I got there, it was clear that there were some moms who knew each other, but also a lot of moms who didn’t know anyone. Phew! So Toshi and I plopped down by a few moms who seemed to know no one else. Toshi was a bit of an icebreaker– she’d crawl over to this one baby and start holding onto his mom’s sandal… He was cute and only one month older than her. Before we got to talking though, baby time started. I was surprised at how short it was. I think it went for about 15 mins. There were 2 books and maybe about 4 songs. Plus going around the room and for introductions. I spent most of my time chasing after Toshi and stopping her before she grabbed onto a baby. She really wanted to touch this boy’s hair, but I wouldn’t let her. And then later, she wanted to touch this girl’s eyes, but again, I thought that wasn’t a good idea. And when she kept crawling over to the 3 month old… I didn’t even let her reach out her hand. That baby looked pretty delicate! It seemed like all the other babies were content in their mom’s lap. I got a few comments about Toshi’s hair. And I talked to a few other moms. One mom was obviously very outgoing. And I think another mom was trying to talk to me, but we were both a little on the quiet side. Plus I get so distracted when I’m watching Toshi around other babies. Man… I feel like I’m back at junior high, trying to figure out who I’m going to sit with in the cafeteria. What a yucky feeling. So afterwards, we just kind of hung out for another 15 mins until Toshi got fed up that I wouldn’t let her touch the other babies. It’s hard because I don’t want her to hurt another baby, but I don’t want her to feel like she can’t play with her new buddies. She just doesn’t know how powerful her little pinches are.

All in all, it was fun for Toshi to see all the babies. We’ll try to go next week.

Here is little Toshi playing outside of our closed bedroom door. I was trying to catch her holding the teether over her head. I think it’s funny that her arms can barely reach over her head. When she was holding the teether over her head, her arms were so tight to her head that they were pulling back her hair. So now I know what she would look like with a headband on…
