An armful

Toshi is beginning to be a bit of a handful. We have entered a new phase, and it is exhausting. Toshi must be bored with everything on ground level, since she now insists on being picked up and carried around all day. She points and twists her body to show me where she wants me to walk. It’s a guessing game. And if I guess wrong, there is lots of loud fake crying and whining noises. Usually she wants to do something that I don’t want her to do: stir a pot of boiling water, go outside on the balcony without our coats/shoes, go on the couch to cry and flop around. It can be frustrating for both of us. Thank goodness she is still taking two naps.

She also cries bloody murder when I try to change her diaper. She would be so happy if I would just let her stay in her sopping wet, poop-filled diaper all day. I keep thinking the neighbors will call child services on me because she cries sooo loud. I’m really hoping she outgrows the diaper change cry before we travel for Christmas…

Even though it’s hard to tend to her wants, it’s still fun. I guess it is a sign of how much she is growing and learning. Today I took her to the small park around the corner and she walked around. I think it was really fun for her to walk around outside. When it was time to leave, though, she didn’t want to! She started crying, and it struck me as a neat thing… it made her seem like a little kid. She’s no longer a baby that I can just make do whatever I need her to do. She’s a kid that knows what she wants (and isn’t afraid to cry to get it).

One other thing I noticed today: Toshi was teasing me! She sat on the ground and started to slowly lean back. I quickly put my arm behind her. She laughed at how fast I jumped. (It was an Irland reflex jump.) So then throughout the day, Toshi kept slowly leaning backward, looking me in the eye. Anytime she leaned back too far, she caught herself with her arm, or at least broke her fall. Maybe she thought she had invented a new game.
