The new mom jeans

Posted by kara

Yesterday at the library’s story time, I heard a mom relaying a story to another mom about how her husband thought that her new haircut looked like a “mom” haircut. The other mom assured her that it was a very nice haircut and did NOT look like a “mom” haircut. Are you serious? Isn’t a “mom” haircut like mine? Nonexistent? I haven’t had a haircut since October.

I always get so irritated that people use “mom” as a negative adjective. God forbid that someone thinks you are wearing “mom” jeans or listening to “mom” music. When I look around at moms today, I see low-rise jeans that show their behinds when they squat. I see moms that all have their own style. Yes, maybe something happens when you are a mom. Your body changes and your old clothes don’t fit the same. I feel like I have little time or money to make myself look better, but when I think about it, I devote the same amount of time and money to my beauty regimen that I did before I had a baby. (Yeah, I don’t do much.) I am pretty sure that if I didn’t have a baby, I’d still be running around in the same jeans, wearing a hoodie and sneakers.

When did looking like a mom become a bad thing? I think the only thing that makes you look like a mom is if you are carrying a baby and a diaper bag. Take away the baby and diaper bag, and you have a woman with the same style she was rocking before.

So moms, don’t worry about the “mom” stereotype. We are all different and we are just as sloppy as we were when we were in college. [Are you wearing thaaaat?]
