Gret’s Wedding!

Posted by kara

My mom, Martha, and I went to Gret’s wedding. The trip there was so easy… I didn’t even break a sweat! Martha slept on the plane rides (2 hrs, then 1 hr). It was all perfect, even though my mom and I tried to check our luggage into the wrong airline and then we tried to hop on the wrong plane… but we got to Montrose in the end! We drove to Telluride (Mountain Village) and I could tell the altitude was getting higher. My dad met up with us and we all had headaches. Martha seemed fine… no signs of stress.

Gretchen and Russ had a beautiful rehearsal dinner… Russ is from Mississippi, and there were a ton of hilarious Southern folks there. Gret was so sweet…My parents and I were running Martha out of the room because she was crying and needed to be fed. Gret ran after us, thinking we were leaving. When she found out I was looking for a place to feed Martha, she found me a quiet room and offered to be the lookout. I laughed at her and told her to get back to the party. Good thing because they started the toasts a minute later. I heard some of the toasts and they were very sweet and funny. My favorites were when Russ’s friend said he was mad at Russ for telling his mom, “NO MAMA!” when she said she was going to hire him a maid; when Gret’s brother Alex said there was no one he loved more than Gret; and when Mrs. Kay told Russ to take care of her little girl and he said he would because she’s his little girl too.

Martha’s outfit… She had on little socks with pink mary janes printed on them. The outfit reminded me of a Japanese schoolgirl (since her hat had a smiley bug face on it).

The wedding was so “Gret”… Every detail was very easy, breezy, beautiful… I know Mrs. Kay was key in planning the wedding (much like my mom was for mine), and it paid off. I was constantly wowed throughout the day by the thoughtfulness put into the decorations and the comfort of the guests.

I was slightly worried about feeling like the odd man out since I only knew Gret’s family and my parents, and because I missed the b-ette party. However, her bridesmaids were so friendly. I knew Gret would surround herself with nice, laid back gals. I really liked everyone and didn’t feel nearly as awkward as I normally do around strangers. Although, they all seemed really tall…

…and thin. It didn’t help my feeling self-conscious about my leftover baby belly, but I know I was probably the most critical of how I looked in the dress. Anyway, the guests were nice too! So many people came up to me to see Martha. My parents made friends with Mrs. Kay’s friends and the people at our table. Plus we got to sit with Mr. Kay and Renee!

Gret wore a beautiful gown… She put it on and looked AMAZING.

The ceremony was very sweet. Yes, I cried. I regretted not putting tissues in my cool dress pockets. (I hope no one saw me wipe tears and snot away with my hand!) The minister talked about how their love would affect others and change the world for the better. Alex and his wife Jaime read a lovely poem they wrote (more tears).

I had such a good time. I wish Paul, Toshi, and my brothers would have been able to make it. I’m so glad I went. Mrs. Kay and Gret were so accommodating and understanding about how tied I was to Martha’s schedule. (And my parents were so helpful – I couldn’t have done it by myself!) I felt incredibly honored to be a part of the wedding. My Grettie means so much to me and I couldn’t miss her getting married to Russ. It was nice to get to know him better – he’s a good one! Now I just want to go visit the Kays and Gret more often!
